Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy or Hypnosis can feel like a minefield with many different approaches on offer. Cathy Cookson Advanced Hypnotherapist explains how getting the approach right is key to success.

There are so many ways in which you can search for wellbeing it can feel overwhelming as to where to start when you begin to look, and often at a time where you can emotionally feel quite distracted.  In the guides over the coming weeks I will explain in more detail what each of the modalities can help you with and how to use them most effectively for wellbeing to help break the jargon – As a qualified Hypnotherapist I wanted to start by explaining Hypnotherapy/ Hypnosis.

There are many different ways you can use hypnotherapy or hypnosis- Suggestion Hypnotherapy, Hypno-Analysis, NLP Hypnotherapy , Metaphor Hypnotherapy, Repitition Hypnosis to name a few. To begin with a hypnotherapist should assess which approach would be right for you to make sure the approach used is personal to you and your emotions/situation – as this will only be affective if so.

Why? Because the subconscious mind is designed to protect you, it does this by storing every event that has ever happened to you as an emotional recall alert. Let’s say you want to give up smoking and even though logically you want to quit and you recognise all the dangers of continuing to smoke -if it has an emotional connection to you- lets say your brain learned smoking was a positive habit because you started when you were 17 and chasing freedom from school/home/independant adulthood as an example-your brain could emotionally see it as a positive thing to do because it represents ‘freedom’ and keep you ‘unable’ to quit.Make sense?

And so if the wrong approach was used here- let’s say suggestion hypnosis- it is likely to only make a short term difference because you haven’t first of all worked on the brain re-learning what smoking represents.

Sugestion Hypnotherapy is when a Hypnotherapist will relay a series of suggestions for the brain to absorb to retrain the mind.

Hypno- Analysis is when you would speak directly yo the subconscious mind to find out answers/ connect to emotions/ understand what is happening at a deeper level.

NLP Hypnotherapy is used to evoke emotions that have been stored in the subconscious mind and use these through hypnosis to reconnect you to the origional feeling.

Metaphor Hypnotherapy is when you are guided into situations that have a deeper meaning to them, to nudge the subconscious into connecting it’s own answers.

Repitition Hypnosis is similar to suggestion however will be mainly based on repitition of statements to encourage the brain to retrain the way it talks to you- similar to affirmations in meditation.

Hypnotherapy is an amazing modality and when used correctly can connect you with a far deeper understanding of self and root cause issues. I hope this has been helpful to give you some very straight forward ideas about how hypnotherapy may help you on your wellbeing journey.
